The Present Simple Tense
The Present Simple tense is one of the most common tenses in English. We use it to talk about:
- Habits and routines → I go to school every day.
- General facts → The sun rises in the east.
- Things that are always true → Water boils at 100°C.
1. Positive Statements
The verb changes depending on the subject.
-
With I, You, We, They → use the base verb.
Example: I watch movies. -
With He, She, It → add -s (or -es for some verbs).
Example: She watches movies.
Rule: He/She/It → verb + -s / -es
2. Negative Statements
To make a negative, we use do not (don’t) or does not (doesn’t) + base verb.
-
With I, You, We, They → don’t + verb
Example: They don’t watch movies. -
With He, She, It → doesn’t + verb
Example: He doesn’t watch movies.
Notice: After doesn’t, the verb goes back to the base form (no -s).
3. Questions
To ask questions, we use Do or Does + subject + base verb.
-
With I, You, We, They → Do + subject
Example: Do you watch movies? -
With He, She, It → Does + subject
Example: Does she watch movies?
Again: After does, the verb is in the base form (no -s).
Quick Tips
-
Only He/She/It changes in positive statements (add -s/-es).
-
In negatives and questions, the verb stays in the base form.
